Generation WHY?

As South Africans welcomed thousands of foreigners for the 2010 Soccer World Cup, to many parents, the term foreign is nothing new.

Dubbed Generation Y, Millennials or Echo Boomers, these young, hunched spirits casually roam our country, spellbound within their handheld virtual worlds, only to come up for air to take a quick glance at the world through their untamed tresses.

Their suave, easily mistaken for arrogance, determined to right the wrongs of those who roamed before them. Equipped with the powerful expectation of what was previously deemed impossible, unattainable and simply unheard of. They are bearers of change, seeking meaning, seeking truth. They own the future. They are – your kids.

They are different in every way, and to many a surprise, not so much for the sake of simply being different. They crave understanding and respect. Fellowship and sharing. And although they are so easily labelled as being unbalanced, ill rounded and darn right… left, is it not simply a case of trying to define that which frankly cannot be found in any a respectable thesaurus?

Today’s youth face challenges their parents cannot even think to fathom. They need to be able to adapt to rapid and radical change, to grasp the complex dynamics of various cultures and to distinguish between fact and fiction as the difference grows ever so hard to tell.  Amidst a world wide web of opinions, views and attitudes, they are expected to develop their own individual identity, strong enough to withstand unavoidable criticism yet flexible enough to allow for vital growth.

How is it then, that we are so quick to shake our heads in frustration as we are convinced that this too shall pass and that they will soon surrender their peculiar ways and start to act normal?

MiFootprint is convinced that this generation will not only be different in their youth, but so too as adults and elders. They will continue to be dynamic, adventurous go-getters. Is this not exactly the generation this country – and even the world – needs to move forward as we enter a new decade?

With a sincere passion for the country’s youth as their driving force, this group of young entrepreneurs has made it their mission to create experiences which serve this oft-misunderstood generation’s needs in exciting, fun and unique ways. They aim to strike a healthy balance between the youth’s tech-savvy, virtual world and the natural world, naturally. MiFootprint’s experiences are designed to enable the youth to leave their own unique footprint at various unforgettable destinations as they (re)discover South Africa.
